The format for RPC2020 is going to be quite a bit different to that of previous years. This is mainly as result of Covid-19 and the delays and restrictions it has imposed.
In the past we invited 3 groups of 12 influential people from the worlds of Conservation, Sport, Business and Entertainment to take part in the Challenge. Each person was tasked with sourcing pledges from their respective networks and these pledges were made prior to the event and paid after the event. The format was very successful and resulted in over R1.5m being raised for our beneficiaries over the past 4 years.
This year however, we have decided to open the opportunity to 36 members of the broader public to be a part of the Rhino Peak Challenge and have asked people who are interested in being a RPC Ambassador to send us motivations as to why they’d like to join the fundraising effort. A condition of their application needs to be a commitment to raise a minimum of R10 000.00 as part of their participation in RPC2020.
Please support our Ambassadors and the RPC by choosing to make a donation on one or more of them. Donations can be made via GivenGain using the ‘Make Donation’ buttons against each profile OR by using the non-profit bank account below used in conjunction with the ‘Payment Reference’ found on the profiles below.

Scholar, grade 10
I am in grade 10 at Danville Park Gils High School I love spending time in nature and I love running in natural areas. I run a lot with my border collie Zippy. I recently went on a three-day hike in the Berg and love being surrounded by the wilderness and natural beauty of the area. Last year I completed my Bronze President's Award, this year I'm doing my Silver President's Award. My community service involved working at animal shelters as this is where my interest lies. I love traveling throughout South African and enjoy camping in game reserve areas.
- Ran the Oxpecker trail run
- I did a 3 day hike (40 km) up Mweni Pass
- Completed the Midmar Mile
- Completed Glen Cairn trail run
- Achieved over 100 hours of pilates training
I Would like to complete the Rhino Peak Challenge as it combines two things that I love: trail running and being in nature. I am motivated to support organisations that work to preserve endangered species. Without a combined effort from all of us endangered species such as vultures and rhinos cannot survive. I hope that supporting this challenge will motivate other young people to support these issues too.

I am a quietly confident person, I apply diligence in my academics and understand the benefits of an active lifestyle. I am a ‘team player’, partaking in most school sports as well as regular trail running. I love nature and being outdoors and recently completed a 48km hike in Mnweni. I am a qualified junior lifeguard, I surf and enjoy relaxing on the beach. I have completed the Silver President’s Award and am currently busy with the Gold award. I was recently acknowledged by my school for my involvement with community, NPO’s/charities and animal organizations. I am passionate about all animals, wildlife and their protection and help weekly at PACT (Phoenix Animal Care & Treatment).

I am supporting the Rhino Peak Challenge as I understand the urgent need for funds for the beneficiaries due to the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. I am angered and saddened at the black rhino statistics, that they are ‘critically’ endangered, the constant danger that black and white rhinos face. They deserve to roam wild and free, and to be protected. Vultures are facing the same threat, being poisoned and hunted for the ‘animal trade’ market. We need to educate people and provide safety for these species before they become extinct! I am confident that I can cope with the challenge and hope to inspire others to become more involved with protecting our endangered wildlife.

Wildlife ACT Leadership
Chris, Simon and Jo founded Wildlife ACT in 2008 to help save Africa’s endangered and priority species, and support and work with communities adjacent to protected areas, many who have been marginalized by conservation initiatives. Mark has been a great Wildlife ACT supporter from the beginning, and this year stepped up as the MD. The opportunity to participate in this event together, represents the dedication and commitment of Wildlife ACT staff and the conservation successes achieved over the years.
Wildlife ACT is just like a sports team working together. We are very proud captains of the achievements our current and past team players have had in our 12-year existence. We recently released our Impact Report and are using this challenge as a means to celebrate our teams’ achievements, and showcase how we plan to tackle future challenges!
We feel privileged that Rhino Peak Challenge has chosen Wildlife ACT as a partner and beneficiary for funds raised via this unique initiative.

I’m originally from Akron, Ohio but lived overseas in Luxembourg, Tanzania, India and now South Africa. I recently moved from Johannesburg to KZN (Hilton) with my husband Dyllan and 2-year-old son, William – and am absolutely loving the area! Inspired by my Dad and five siblings, I love to run, especially on trails in the forest, bush or farmlands – anything from a chatty 5k meander to a rainy Marathon. I’m also passionate about wildlife and being in the bush and nature as much as possible. Last but not least, I love food, good wine, a long afternoon braai with friends and always ready for a new travel adventure.
- Completed two silent, 10-day Vipassana mediation courses
- Climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro twice!
- Ran a self-directed Marathon through the Karkloof area as a fundraiser for the Nottingham Road Primary School
- Can eat an entire large pizza in one sitting!
The challenge speaks to so many areas that I’m passionate about – preserving incredible wildlife and natural resources, a personal and collective challenge that requires physical and mental stamina, and a chance for a fun getaway to meet new friends and spend time outdoors. In my work in business development, I also know that organizations such as a Wildlife ACT rely on the generosity and the commitment of individuals to stay afloat – and to continue the critical work to preserve South Africa’s beauty for future generations. It’s a pleasure and honour to participate!

In August of 2019 while on a family get away at Drakensberg Gardens Resort a huge bush fire broke out. It burned for 3 days across the mountains and the smell of smoke hung in the air for days when going for walks and runs in the mountains. We witnessed first hand the destruction of the habitat so this is a wonderful way to help with the conservation efforts in the area and at the same time run on the trails that were not accessible while we were there as a result of the fire.

I am a Christian first and lover of life and people. A single parent raising fearless confidence to a feisty yet very determined 16 year daughter. I have always had a passion to serve others and that passion led me into radio, a platform which I use with great intention to influence and activate social change. In the 3 or 4 odd years I have lived in the North Coast I have garnered a deeper appreciation for nature and the conservation thereof. I am still very much afraid though of geckos! The lizards in Lesotho and the Free State are not so pale!
This is a good one. I am probably the most un-athletic (not sure if that is even a word) person you will ever meet, and therefore have unfortunately not achieved any major sporting accolades over the years. Although, now that I think of it, I did run a cross country race in primary school, and was part of the 6th netball team at my high school (6 out of 7 teams) that should count for something….right?!?!
It was a few years ago when I was first introduced to the movie / documentary “Blood Lions” sadly a few months before I interviewed Nicola Gerrard about the movie I had innocently visited a “Cheetah Farm” in the Free State. My mind was very quickly changed and my perspective of my visit immediately shifted. Unfortunately, from a cultural perspective not enough information is available about nature conservation within black communities. And well, ever since then I have become very intentional in raising awareness through the medium of radio and social media to raise awareness. I am hopeful that through this Challenge, especially building up to it I can use my influence to enlighten and educate others about the importance of nature conservation. As well as the overall impact we play as a society on it.

And the fact that there is people that have the passion and time to drive such events as Rhino peak challenge need to be supported by us in order to make it a success for them.

This is an awesome opportunity to demonstrate my passion for sustainability, specifically the role of biodiversity and the important role played by vultures in the ecosystem. Eskom has a partnership with EWT which focuses on reducing the impact of power lines on birds.
While I have participated in many sporting events I have not had the opportunity of such an awesome challenge and have not recently spent time in our beautiful Drakensberg mountains. I am originally from Germany (half German – half French) and moved to South Africa about 6 years ago in order to pursue a career in wildlife conservation. I started my PhD at the University of Pretoria and worked on a research project to improve the treatment options for poached rhino victims. Currently, I am a postdoctoral fellow researching options to improve the wellbeing and welfare of rhinos during translocations. My love for the outdoors, for adventure and our natural world led me to the sport of trail running. Today, I can’t imagine my life without my daily dose of trail running/exploring/hiking anymore. Having always had Rhino Peak close by, I have climbed to the summit numerous times and most often taken friends up Rhino to show off our piece of the berg. There are few things better than to see someone experience the climb and summit the Peak for the first time. I think the only thing that could outshine this, is summiting Rhino as a RPC Ambassador and contribute to raising money for something so close to my heart. As someone who derives so much joy from nature, it would be a huge privilege to be able to make a contribution to ensuring its future. It continues to be so important to me that we conserve what we have now, so that one day our children and then their children will be able experience this ecological gift.

Growing up, our family holidays were to game reserves around KZN. (I have vivid memories of being forced off the road by an angry bull elephant...) My family lived next to a small nature reserve, where I'd hike with my mother and siblings, and later with friends.
In adulthood, hiking happened in the Drakensberg and I introduced my husband to game reserve trips.
Since starting my job editing TRAIL magazine in 2014, my primary outdoor activity is trail running! I'm not a fast runner, and I'm not an ultrarunner, but I run. And I find bliss on singletrack, especially along rivers and down hills.

On a recent trip to iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the first rhino I saw had its horn sawn off. Sad to see, but better a hornless rhino than a lifeless rhino.
Right at the end of lockdown, I was lucky to get a short weekend in the Southern Drakensberg. It was very windy, and vultures were swooping low; one of them a lammergeier! What a privilege.
I want to be a part of the Rhino Peak Challenge, not just because the Rhino Peak itself is a magnificent summit, but because I want the sightings and experiences I've had to continue. How awful to see these majestic creatures disappear before my eyes.

I am a 29-year-old Sport Scientist, adventurer and sport lover from Bloemfontein.
I am a husband, father of two and a new small business owner. I have a passion for nature, sport and helping people. My family is my motivation and drives me to push myself as much as possible.
I have a love for adventure and regularly seek ways and experiences to improve myself in every way of my being. Whether it be a race, an expedition or any opportunity I am put outside of my comfort zone.
- Living and working as a Sport Scientist in Mumbai, India. I worked with some of the best cricketers in India as well as players from 4 IPL teams.
- 2x Finisher of Ironman 70.3 East London (better time than expected).
- 2nd overall Finisher and Team record holder for Crocks Rock Adventure Race.
- Starting my own gym facility after less than one year of independent working. A dream and vision I’ve had since I knew what I wanted to study.
- Being a father is very special to me. It is definitely something I am very proud of and try to be the best dad I can possibly to my daughter and son.
I have a love and passion for the Drakensberg Mountain Range. I am an animal and nature lover and really feel honored to be a part of this fundraiser. Knowing that my contribution can help preserve and protect the amazing Drakensberg range and its wildlife, is motivation for me to do my best to give an opportunity for my children to one day also enjoy the amazing experience of being in the mountains. The mountains are where I get to be myself and temporarily forget of whatever it is I am challenged with at that time in my life.

Tourism Consultant for Kenton on Sea Tourism
Wife and mother to 3 beautiful girls. Chilled, happy go lucky person. Love being at home with kids but also love the outdoors. Whenever I can get to a game reserve I go. Running has become my new love and love beating my personal best.
I was a game ranger for many years and loved showing people our wonderful country and all the animals we have, I still do some guiding now at a game reserve not far from where I live and it’s always fun getting out.
I currently work at a Tourism Office in Kenton on Sea, which is a small seaside town that attracts lots of visitors. And it’s my job to make visitors stay fun and enjoyable.
I love being with my girls, they also outgoing and arty girls.
To be honest – None, just beating my own time every run that I do. Trying to do 10km in an hour, and I’m almost there.
Animals are very close to my heart and I love supporting animal conservation programs. Unlike humans, animals don’t have a voice and they need people to protect them.
I would just like to be part of this challenge to know that I am supporting and helping to raise funds for conservation and to push myself as I’ve never done anything like this before.

Gym owner and coach
I'm an avid trail runner, specialising in running in sandals and barefoot shoes. I own and coach at a gym in Durban called, The IRON Movement, where we specialise in Kettlebell lifting and functional movement training. I also coordinate weekly trail run at various reserves in and around Durban with a few of my gym members that enjoy running. I've also recently made the decision to work towards competing in the Karkloof 100 next year. Animal welfare is something very close to my heart. I am outspoken in my daily life about the cruel realities of of circuses, zoos, hunting, captive sea mammals and harm to our local Durban wildlife, in particular vervet monkeys.
- Opened my own gym with 2 partners 6 years ago.
- First and only StrongFirst Level 2 instructor in Durban
- Changed to a fully plant based diet 5 years ago
- Overcame a meniscal tear of my knee with the adoption of barefoot running footwear 9 years ago.
- Featured model for Merrell footwear ad campaign shot in the Drakensberg approximately 6 years ago.
I consider myself an animal lover and supporter of all animals rights to their own autonomy and to be able to enjoy their lives free from abuse and the impact of humans. I would love the opportunity to raise money for animal focused organisations to help support the great work they are doing. The prospect of it culminating with a run in the berg is the cherry on the top.
No sponsors but I am a tester for T-Rockets Sandals and have a working partnership with the distributor of Vivobarefoot shoes in South Africa.

Organisational Culture Consultant at The Appletree Group. / Author, Speaker and Coach at The Middle.
At age 18, I was introduced to cause driven adventure when I cycled around the world, raising R1.7million for vulnerable children. In 2004, following my studies, I lived in Thailand working as an underwater videographer. After surviving the tsunami, I returned home to develop The Appletree Group; a group of consultants and companies who support organisations to shape and sustain a healthy culture. In 2018 I founded The Middle; a brand committed to equipping individuals and teams with the resilience and grit needed to reach ambitious goals. I have swopped the bicycle for trail shoes! I am married to Toni and have two daughters, aged 7 and 3.

I am in my second year of a BA (LLB) at UCT. I love to run, travel, play music and learn new languages. I started running in 2018 fearing that I might enjoy it and I did! I entered to run Two Oceans and Comrades this year, but when the pandemic struck, I settled for doing a marathon in my courtyard. I’ll never turn someone down if they ask me to run with them and I try to support others through my running any way I can. We live in such a beautiful country, so why not explore it on foot?
- First race – 1h50 half marathon (August 2018)
- 10k PB – 45:42 in 2nd half of a half marathon (October 2019)
- New PB on Chappies Challenge half marathon – 1200m elevation gain (October 2019)
- First marathon – 3h56 (February 2020)
- Second marathon – nearly 6 hours of running around a 40m loop in my courtyard in support of Hillcrest AIDS Centre, over R5 000 raised (April 2020)
We can't all do the manual work of protecting our animals, but we do what we can, and I can run! We just don’t get a second chance with endangered species. I am very familiar with the sight of Rhino Peak, so I know it will be challenging, but I would do it over and over to the point of exhaustion if that would encourage people to support the Wildlife ACT, The Endangered Wildlife Trust and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, because each of these charities is doing such important work for our wildlife - work that ordinary people like myself can't do.

Branch Manager: Boston City Campus / Owner: Strong – Like a Girl
I am foremost a wife to a loving husband and mother to two wonderful daughters, aged 10 and almost 8. My heart belongs on a mountain top! I am an avid trail runner and love exploring trails and chasing waterfalls! When the family joins in, running switches to hiking and the Drakensberg is our absolute favourite. Our girls and myself have a morning mantra which we repeat on the way to school – “I am Brave. I am Strong. I am Kind. I am Smart. I am Beautiful.” I hope to inspire girls and women of all ages to discover what strength means to them.
I believe that it is very important to be active in your community and I regularly assist with fundraising initiatives and collection drives. I have had the privilege of being a Guest Speaker at various local business and sporting events and award ceremonies, and was also featured in the Northern KZN Get It Magazine twice.
Obstacle Racing is my first sport love and I qualified for and competed at the 2018 Obstacle Course Racing World Championship in London as an age group athlete (3km, 15km and Team Sprint). I have also obtained several Warrior Race podiums in Elite events.
I was recently able to turn a passion into a successful side-hustle, and started “Strong – Like a Girl”. A women only fitness and fitness event business.
All trail runners and hikers have a common love for nature and the awe-inspiring landscapes we get to run and hike in, but often we aren’t as aware as we should be about the behind-the-scenes action. We need to understand the complexity of the conservation battles that are fought on a daily basis. We need to know that if action is not taken, species like the Rhino and Bearded Vulture will be lost for future generations. I believe the Rhino Peak Challenge creates awareness to the plight of these endangered animals in a very unique way and I am proud to be an Ambassador for the cause.

I am a qualified ITF (International Tennis Federation) coach with an honours degree in Environmental Sciences majoring in conservation and climate change (WITS) and have an ETA certificate in Coaching Science.
My passions in life are working with children and conservation and my favorite things in the world to do are coach and play tennis, try my best to educate all my players about the importance of conservation, trail run and drink copious amounts of coffee...
I am full of passion and adventure and am always up for any challenge, I rarely turn down an idea and absolutely love being active, healthy and will say yes to anything outdoors. I hope I can inspire people to live a life of passion and purpose while having fun along the way.
- Completing Karkloof 100 miler 2019 and 2020
- An epic yet hilarious MisAdventure at Pondo Ultra 100km 2018
- Addo 50 miler 2019
- Have also completed 10 Wild Series events which is special to me due to the money these events raise for conservation
- Also a very important achievement in my life was opening my own high performance tennis academy which I worked towards for over 10 years.
My reason for wanting to complete and support RPC is that I have an undying love for conservation and to be able to raise funds and awareness for such an amazing cause while doing something that I love so much (trail running) is just too cool for words. I would love to use this as an opportunity to not only raise the funds needed but a platform to teach all the children (and adults) I coach how important looking after out environment and wildlife is. We live in the most beautiful country and being involved in something like this makes me very proudly South African.

Manager Berg Dairies / Underberg Dairy
Born in JHB and bred in Durban, after completing a business degree I lived and worked in London for 4 years. Shortly after returning to SA, I moved to Himeville to marry a farmer – a drastic change of scenery, but a welcome one. For the 13 years since, I have lived in this amazing part of the country with the Southern Drakensberg as a back drop. Three kids, 4 dogs, 1 cat, 8 horses and countless pet lambs later, having been part of building a farmer driven dairy processing enterprise and with the onset of middle age spread, I decided to try running in those mountains.
Junior school Victrix Ludorum…and Rhino Peak Challenge 2020!
Having literally only started running again this year after a break of more than 20 years, I have enjoyed seeing the progression as my fitness has improved. And the Rhino Peak Challenge is the ultimate test of that progression.
As a District local, with the peak always on the horizon and the event becoming more and more well known, it is even more of a privilege to be given the opportunity to take part.
Add to that the excellent conservation efforts it supports and the allure of the challenge is complete!
