TONI MCCANN

Age: 25

Hometown: Durban but I now live in the Mother City

Lucky Draw Prize:
A 1000 piece puzzle / A bottle of my favorite wine (White/Red) / A pair of Goodr sunnies / Other Goodies from my very generous sponsors (TBC)

Occupation:

Full-Time marketing and social media manager at Branded Footwear and Clothing Co / Part-Time wine pourer at Publik Wine

About Me:

I’m a wannabe wine snob and part-time wine pourer at Publik, I attempt to be good at my full-time job, and I run in my spare time. Up mountains, trail, track, road – wherever my Altra’s take me. I’m also an avid puzzle maker and have been known to smash a 1500 piece in a single day. My running ‘career’ has taken me all over the world this year, racing in the Golden Trail World Series. It’s been a whirl-wind adventure and privilege to line up against some of the world’s best! Now I line up, not to race, but eager to raise money to help preserve the lands I try tread as lightly on as possible!

Sporting Bio:

- 3rd Otter Trail 2018
- 1st (overall) Ultra Trail Drakensberg 30km 2019
- 16th Zegama Aizokorri 2019
- 18th Marathon du Mont Blanc 2019
- 1st Whale of Trail 2019 (and new record)

Reason for taking Challenge:

I’ve always been an ‘outside’ person. On the dam or in the sea fishing with my dad. Riding motorbikes or mountain bikes. Hiking, camping. The South African ‘great outdoors’ has given me so much in terms of memories, experiences and joy and now it’s time for me to give back. Rhino Peak challenge is my small contribution to a greater goal of raising awareness for animal and environmental conservation.

- Seeing the magnificence of the ordinary
- Completed 3 x hundred milers, 2 x comrades marathons and 2 x MDS desert runs

Reason for taking Challenge:

When Spurge first shared the Rhino Peak Challenge he and I were actually ascending the Peak. It sounded like a dream and an honour to run. My feet on the ground sweating a mountain for an incredible creature and purpose. The symbolism of man climbing for purpose. To run to help to serve. What an honour then to receive an invitation for 2019. How miss-understood is the true purpose and value of a Rhino Horn. It belongs only where it is birthed. I identify the “misunderstood” – it kills the soul of humanity and of Africa. We have a responsibility to walk; to run; to climb for the shared spirit of keeping where truth belongs.

Occupation:

Director – Conservation Outcomes

About Me:

Passionate conservationist, committed personally and professionally to protecting our natural environment, having spent the first decade of my professional career working with landowners across the country to secure our crane populations. My focus has always been on working with landowners across the landscape, using key iconic species, be they Rhino, vultures, Oribi or cranes, as a means to motivate and encourage people to value conservation. This has led to what I consider a significant achievement, being the establishment of a new conservation NGO together with colleagues, namely Conservation Outcomes, which focuses on securing new protected areas on private and communal land. An outdoor lifestyle has been part of my upbringing, enjoying visiting and experiencing the remote reserves of southern Africa. Mountain biking and trail running have allowed me to maintain an active lifestyle and become a great way of exploring new areas around our magnificent country.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Completed 13 Cape Argus cycle tours
- Completed 3 Sani2C MTB events
- Completed the 2019 Oxpecker trail run

Reason for taking Challenge:

Conservation is not a luxury, but rather a survival imperative. In order to change the perceptions of the general public of the value of looking after our environment, specifically in changing behaviours, we need to use the plight of iconic species such as Rhino, Vultures and Cranes to highlight our impacts. Apart from the awareness generated by the Rhino Peak Challenge, I am also committed to raising much needed financial resources, enabling the continuation of the excellent work being carried out by WACT, EWT and EKZNW.

In 2011, Ryan won the Leadville 100 miler mountain race in Leadville, Colorado, setting the 3rd fastest time in the history of the race and the fastest time by a non-American - it was his first 100 miler. He is an ambassador of the prestigious Laureus Foundation and special mention about his phenomenal career was made at the International Laureus Awards in Abu Dhabi.

Ryan’s biography, Trail Blazer, written by Steve Smit, was launched in English in 2016. In 2017 his book was translated into Spanish - the 2nd most spoken language on earth. What started out as a “passion project” turned into a best-selling book. One of his greatest victories was in 2017 when he won the Western States 100 known as the world’s oldest 100 miler.

At the beginning of 2018 Ryan and a friend, Ryno Griesel, set a new trail running record on a section of the Great Himalayan Trail through Nepal. An eye-watering time of 25 days 4 hours and 24 minutes was set on a combination of the high and cultural route on the GHT. A distance of 1 435km was covered, which the men ran virtually non-stop, climbing 63 721m in elevation gain which is the equivalent of climbing 7.5 Mount Everest’s. Ryan is a doting father to son Max, as well as their adopted fur-child, Thandi and he has been married to his actress/business-woman wife, Vanessa Haywood-Sandes for 5 years. People are inspired not only by Ryan’s athletic ability but also his humble and down-to-earth approach to life. He is a highly sought after motivational speaker and is considered one of the world’s leading ultra trail runners.

Andrew: Being based in Underberg, the trails and peaks of the Southern Drakensberg have been my training/play ground for some time now. They have provided me with endless adventures, taught me how to push myself beyond what I thought was possible and given me lifelong memories. POWERING CHANGE

Team Members:
Deidre Herbst / Caroline Henry

Occupation:

Deidre: Environmental Manager
Caroline: Independent Non-Exec consultant / Director
Chartered Accountant

About The Team:

Deidre: As the environmental manager of Eskom I have the privilege of working closely with the EWT on mainstreaming biodiversity in business, an important component of conserving and enhancing ecosystems and protecting species. Caroline and I feel very privileged to be representing the Endangered Wildlife Trust for this challenge which provides us, with the help of friends and family with an opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause.

Caroline: I have followed a financial career and have observed how in the last decade environmental conscience has increased in prominence in the financial sector. More recently I am contributing at a non-exec level which enables me to influence an entity’s approach to these issues. I enjoy experiencing new things however fear of failure held me back on the sport scene, thankfully the wisdom of age accepts that mere participation is events is hugely satisfying and can be put to good use. I am grateful to the Endangered wildlife trust for this opportunity to experience this rare event, reawaken my senses to what we seek to protect & enhance my ambassadorial arsenal.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

Deidre:
- Completed full ironman in 2016 and 2017
- Completed several half ironman events
- Completed my first marathon in 2017, my first Two Oceans 24km trail run in 2018

Caroline:
- After being relegated to the egg & spoon race at school sports I never thought I’d do anything sporty so I only started cycling & running at 42
- My most memorable sporting achievements are completing 3 full Ironman races, London & Dublin Marathons & participating in (sadly not completing) the le Tape cycle race

Reason for taking Challenge:

Deidre: The Rhino Challenge provides an opportunity to personally contribute to conservation, in particular to share the importance and value of vultures in our ecosystem.

Caroline: Firstly …Deidre is VERY persuasive… Secondly & most importantly ….I am passionate about equality and that includes all creatures we share this beautiful planet with. Sadly they don’t have a voice so we need to be society’s conscience and be their voice whenever the opportunity arises. The Rhino Peak Challenge is just such an opportunity, providing the vultures a voice whilst facilitating direct financial support. Win-win!

Caroline: Self-funding, but running under the Country Club Johannesburg banner

RHINO AFRICA

Team Members:
Brad Mitchell / Stuart Lewis

Lucky Draw Prize:
Brad: Their name printed on a flag to be carried with me on the Rhino Peak Challenge Stuart: Rhino Africa will provide 5 night stay, 2 nights Camissa House and 3 nights Silvan Safari to the value of R150 000

Occupation:

Brad: Digital Marketing Specialist
Stuart: Head of Product at Rhino Africa

About The Team:

Brad: With a deep-set love of the outdoors and making moments count in all aspects of life, nothing makes me happier than taking in sunrises and sunsets. I can often be found either running, surfing or playing sports somewhere in Cape Town. As a keen birder, qualified falconer and having grown up a stone's throw from the bush throughout my childhood have led to a deep personal connection to nature and birds and taking steps to conserve it. I am driven by creativity and turning crazy ideas into real-life actions. The Rhino Peak Challenge is the daunting realisation of this habit!

Stuart: Descending from a mix of Zimbabwean and South African farming stock I grew up on a farm in Villiersdorp, and naturally developed a love for nature and the outdoors. My affinity with sport led me to study at Stellenbosch University where I by some miracle managed to leave with a BA Social Dynamics and Honors in Politics and International Relations. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to travel from a young age, which sparked a passion and appreciation for Africa and its most valuable resource – its wildlife and wilderness areas. This passion alongside my experience in e-commerce led me to Rhino Africa, where I am fortunate enough to participate in events such as the RPC. In my spare time to stay sane I love spending as much time in Cape Town’s backyard, whether it be trail running on the many Table Mountain tracks, or spending time in the ocean.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

Brad:
- 1x Two Oceans Half Marathon
- 1x Cape Town Marathon
- Runs faster than most fish

Stuart:
-Stellenbosch University (Maties) First Team Rugby
- University of Stellenbosch (Maties) First Team Rugby Sevens
- Schools Full Colours for Rugby
- South African Rowing Championships
- Challenge for a Cause – 400km Cycle through Damaraland, Namibia

Reason for taking Challenge:

Brad: The Drakensberg is a place that I have been intrinsically connected to throughout my life, taking on the Rhino Peak Challenge represents a way to push myself whilst making a contribution to the preservation of the Bearded Vultures that call his special place home. Combining the opportunity to participate in this exclusive event with the commitment to making a tangible contribution to conservation efforts was simply too great a pull on my heart (and sanity) to resist.

Stuart: For the past 4 years I have had the privilege of working with Wildlife Act in a number of initiatives, such as Challenge for a Cause and Project Rhino, and have witnessed the incredible work they do on the ground in the protection of endangered species. The Rhino Peak Challenge represents an opportunity to contribute to a cause that’s close to my heart, and hopefully raise awareness in my community around the importance of events such as RPC and what this support means to its beneficiaries in the restoration and preservation of South Africa’s Rhino, Crane and Vulture populations.
