Age: 29

Hometown: Velddrif

Lucky Draw Prize:
A sketch or small painting by me of your favourite wild animal. Check out my Facebook page - a Part of Me - to see my work.

Occupation:

Veterinary Science final year student

About Me:

I have been in love with the mountains, forests and the sea since I can remember, and I can't imagine a better way to explore the wonders of nature than in my running shoes. To me trail running is more like a lifestyle than just a sport that I take part in- trail runners are my family and the mountains is where I feel at home. I have been running since the age of 12 and have been fortunate enough to take part in cross country and road running on a provincial and national level in the past. I am currently focusing my training mainly on ultra trails (100km's, 100milers mainly). I work and train hard to achieve my goals, and I love to share my running experiences with friends I’ve made through races and training across the country/ world.

Sporting Bio:

- Both Addo and Karkloof 100 milers in 2017, first lady and 3d overall
- 3rd lady in UTCT 2016 and 2017
- Madeira Island Ultra Trail 2018, 6th lady
- Respresented SA at World Champs in Penyagolosa, Spain 2018
- Ultra Trail Raidlight Beachcomber 2018, first lady

Reason for taking Challenge:

Before I studied veterinary science I studied wildlife and conservation, and worked as a field guide for a year. Conservation has always been really important to me, and is just as big a passion to me as trail running. The Rhino Peak Challenge combines my love for sport and nature, and enables me to make a difference by doing what I love for something I am really passionate about.

Entry to Stagger Trail 2018

Occupation:

Eco camp labourer

About Me:

Malugisi has only been a Trust athlete since May. Quite simply he is a complete unknown. He has talent and trail running ability in abundance. He proved how good he is when he nearly beat Christiaan Greyling at Cathedral peak, only out smarted 200m from the finish line. He has no formal training, no nutritional advice and run a mountain race is very old road shoes. We need to get to know Malugisi better but he is very poorly educated and battles to communicate. He is an aggressive runner and is being helped by Kwenza to be more strategic. We have high expectations of him.

Kwenza is Gijima team captain, he is an incredibly organised and thoughtful person. Given his poverty stricken background, Kwenza has achieved a great deal. He could quite easily have been a successful businessman if he had been been lucky enough to borne a wealthy American child. Kwenza has started his own running academy where he supports and encourages the poor children of Greytown to strive for excellence, it gives meaning to their life. We could all take a leaf out of Kwenza's book. He specialises in climbing and ultra distance trail. He wakes up at 3:30am and runs in the cold dark winter mornings in the forest of Greytown with his cell phone torch but he never falters on his training, he is disciplined and is a humble human being.

I’m pretty much always on the hunt for a challenge, and as such, friends have described me as a “peddler of goods” because I’m always on the hustle. Reason for taking Challenge:

Any opportunity to support and back essential causes like the RPC Project in the effort to preserve the Rhino and Bearded Vulture is a cause I want to throw my full weight behind. Far too rarely (I speak for myself) do we as individuals get a chance to make a meaningful difference, so I’ll be towing the “aspiring athletes” line up the 3000m Rhino Peak in the hopes to raise money towards this much needed project. I hope you’ll throw your weight (and money) behind me. #Love

Lucky Draw Prize:
A two-night stay at Giants Castle with a day in the Vulture Hide.

Occupation:

Animal Scientist: Mammals and Birds

About Me:

I grew up in Johannesburg but the adage – you cannot be held accountable for the sins of your parents is so true, and have loved calling KZN my home for last 18 years.
Currently employed as an Animal Scientist with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, focusing on large mammals and bird species, I am acutely aware of our impact on our natural heritage and thus passionate about encouraging an environmental ethos which aims to conserve and protect all facets of biodiversity.
The biggest challenge is the Me, myself and I mantra – getting ahead no matter what the cost and defining our value by what we have and not who we are - conservation action starts with social change.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Marrying an awesome wife
- Producing three wonderful Children
- Three Comrades Marathon’s, finishing 2018 in 10h33
- Completing the other two KZN mega’s – the Duzi Canoe marathon and the Midmar Mile

Vulture Conservation needs support. You cannot define a property to protect these iconic species. The Critically Endangered Bearded Vulture faces extinction if we do not step up our game. The Biodiversity Management Plan for the species has clear actions to ensure its survival, all of which require funding and support.

Co-Founder and Chairman: Wildlife ACT

About Me:

I got into the conservation sector by accident really. Although I enjoyed going to the bush as a youngster, it was only after meeting my two fellow Wildlife ACT co-founders, Chris Kelly and Simon Morgan, that I really got interested in biodiversity conservation. I’ve learnt so much from Simon and Chris and I’m very proud of what we have achieved in the last 10 years.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

On the sporting front my most recent achievement is winning my kids’ primary school fathers sack race – completely nailed it.

Occupation:

Veterinarian and Head of Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs, Bayer Animal Health.
CF-L2 CrossFit trainer.

About Me:

As a veterinarian and researcher, I am inherently passionate about animals, great and small, wild and domestic alike. The amateur photographer in me loves to try and capture that passion in pictures.
I am a fitness enthusiast and CF-L2 CrossFit trainer who thoroughly enjoys challenges and the great outdoors. I spent many years climbing and hang gliding in some of the most beautiful parts of our country.
Why run up or fly off a perfectly good mountain? Simply because it is there.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

SHANE RAW

Age: 44

Hometown: Pietermaritzburg

Lucky Draw Prize:
A hamper of awesomeness including some goodies from First Ascent

Occupation:

I am first and foremost a whitewater kayaker but I also get involved in many other sporting disciplines that keep me challenged and outdoors in the fresh air… I am also a professional lens-cap holder (you’ll have to keep reading to understand that one) and sometimes moonlight as a financial manager too.

About Me:

I grew up in PMB, the paddling centre of the universe and have had a paddle in my hand for as long as I can remember. My other sporting interests include paragliding, adventure racing, MTB’ing and climbing. Apart from my love (some say addiction) for adventure sports, my other main passion is wildlife. I worked in a very successful private conservation organisation in Swaziland for almost 2 decades during which time I was exposed to many incredible experiences, from the somewhat scary midnight anti-poaching patrols to the awe of watching a rhino give birth or a herd of elephant frolicking in a water hole in the midday sun. I also experienced the gruesome horrors of rhino poaching up close and personal and this sparked something in me, a need to do everything I can to protect our beleaguered wildlife of all shapes and sizes. Over the years I have developed a real affinity with the bush – the simplicity, the “realness”, the ebb and flow. We just cannot allow this to be obliterated right before our eyes. Together with my partner, the beautiful and extremely talented wildlife photographer Chantelle Melzer, we have started several initiatives to create awareness and hopefully make a tangible difference in the fight to protect our natural heritage.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Taken part in kayaking events and expeditions in over 30 countries on 4 continents… so far!
- Multiple times South African Freestyle Kayaking Champion and competed in two World Championship events.
- Winner of numerous local extreme down river races and the South African National Extreme Downriver Race Series in 2014
- First decent of the Zambezi’s Batoka Gorge on a standup-paddleboard as part of the #StandUp4Rhinos team.
- Two times winner of the Swazi Xtreme Adventure Race (Sport Edition) as part of team Aieesh.com

Reason for taking Challenge:

So many of us get despondent at the seemingly ceaseless decimation of our precious wildlife and wonder what, if anything we can do to make a difference and also, which of the many conservation organisations to support. What I love about the Rhino Peak Challenge is that both beneficiaries (EWT and Wildlife ACT) are reputable, proactive organisations with a proven track record doing extremely valuable work in the conservation of endangered species and habitats. For this reason I am confident that my efforts in taking part in the RPC are going to the right place i.e. making a REAL difference and I urge my entire network of family, friends and followers to get behind me and this event knowing your support will be doing so too! There is a wealth of additional info on the website about the specific projects and how the funds are used. So hit that pledge button and let’s make a difference!!

Occupation:

Assistant Marketing Manager as SalomonSA

About Me:

Hi my name is Kane, I like Pina Coladas and long walks in the rain… Kidding.
“Retired elite and aspiring amateur athlete”. Assistant Marketing manager by day and semi pro runner by night. I guess I am a “runner” but more importantly am a lover of the outdoors. I grew up in Cape Town, surrounded by mountains and the sea, so nature is ingrained in my DNA.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Current Rhino Peak Challenge record holder.
- 5th Place at the Mont Blanc Marathon 2017.
- Houtbay Trail Challenge winner and record holder 2017/2018
- Fishermans Trail Challenge winner 2016/2017/2018.
- Cape Town Vertical Beer mile champion 2017.

Reason for taking Challenge:

Simply. Nature is a huge part of my life. I grew up in Cape Town, surrounded by mountains and the sea, so nature is really ingrained in my DNA. I’ve had the opportunity to travel the world and be exposed to all kinds of places…one thing has always been overwhelmingly clear - There is no place like South Africa and I’m determined to help protect our land and everything in it! There is so much that I’d love to do in the future…but for now the opportunity of joining the movement created by the guys at Running Man Adventures is amazing. I won’t be in the country this year but I am stoked to be able to be involved from abroad. I’ve been circled by vultures in the Drakensberg before I I really hope that my great, great grand children have the same experience.

Occupation:

Tourism

About Me:

I grew up in Cape Town moving to the Eastern Cape to further my studies (I studied Nature Conservation). Shortly after completing my studies, I spent some time in the Okavango Delta (Botswana) before moving back to Cape Town and joining the team at Rhino Africa. The outdoors has always been a huge part of my life and with Table Mountain on our doorstep, Trail running came easy and I can’t get enough of it!

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Whale Trail 2016 – 2nd Female
- African X Trail Run - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016

Reason for taking Challenge:

From a Nature Conservation background and working for a company like Rhino Africa, the Rhino Peak Challenge provided a great opportunity to create more awareness not only for our Rhino’s, but conservation in all aspects. There was no way I could turn down the opportunity to explore some mountains outside of the Western Cape.

SEAN BROOKES

Age: 26

Hometown: Cape Town

Lucky Draw Prize:
A hamper of delectable South African, hand-crafted artisanal cheeses and treats, from Cheese Gourmet as well as a potential prizes TBC from Rhino Africa.

Occupation:

Videographer at Rhino Africa Safaris

About Me:

I started off following a career path in mechanical engineering, a degree, 2 years in a factory, and a strong dose of a life-threatening illness, I realised I needed to focus on doing things that really mattered to me and to find a way to spend more time outside in nature.
Now you’ll find me behind the lens of a camera filming the best of Southern Africa’s wildlife, creating engaging content for Rhino Africa Safaris, or hanging upside down from a rope 35m in the air on one of the Western Cape’s never ending rock faces.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

Back in my school/university days I played rugby for Wits University U21 until a shoulder injury prompted me to find new interests.
In 2014, I decided to jump on a bicycle and cycle 1850 km down the West Indian Coastline because it seemed like a good idea.
Since moving to Cape Town I’ve tried my hand at the 3 Peak Challenge, summited Sapitwa Peak, Mt Mulanje, Malawi, and most recently hiked across the Bell Traverse, in the Drakensberg.

Reason for taking Challenge:

I promised myself that I would make the most of any opportunity that comes my way, two bouts with cancer and I can say I have learnt how short life can be, so when the chance came to push myself to the limit while exploring one of the most humbling places on earth how could I refuse?
I’ve spent countless days filming Southern Africa’s most endangered species and have seen first hand the incredible beauty, power and vital role these specieses play in maintaining our fragile ecosystems. On a more personal level, during one of my first up-close encounters with a rhino, so close you could feel his breathe blowing on your hand. I took a step back to try comprehend the incredible presence of this creature. Dumbfounded and humbled, I think the real question has become how could you not do everything you can to help save them?
