RHINO PEAK CHALLENGE 2017 - PARTICIPANTS

Elite Runners

TARRYN LOPEZ

Age: 32

Hometown: Tinley Manor, Kzn

Lucky Draw Prize:
TBC

Occupation:

Pilates Instructor

About Me:

I grew up on the coast of kwa Zulu Natal. With my love for the outdoors and too much energy, running was my favorite thing to do from a young age. I ran High School Track and Cross Country at a Provincial level and then went over to the USA to compete at a Collegiate level on a running scholarship. I moved back to SA in 2013 and immediately fell in love with the trails on a back packing hike in the Drakensberg and now spend every chance I get trail running and exploring in the mountains with my other half.

Sporting Bio:

I Competed overseas in the USA for 4 years running Track and Cross Country, winning our Cross Country Conference Championships.
2016 trail race results include wins at Molweni 32km, Ngoje 38km, Umko Trail 8km, and KZN Trail Running Sugar Rush Night Trail 12km, and a second place at Mnweni Marathon 38km
2017 races so far 3rd place Hobbit Trail Race

Reason for taking Challenge:

Every person can make a difference in their own way to protect our beautiful country and its wildlife. Being outdoors is my happy place. There is so much beauty that our nature and wildlife has to offer and for me trail running is one of my favourite ways in which I get to experience and appreciate it all. So when I was asked to support the Rhino Peak Challenge I was super excited to be a part of such a great cause and help spread awareness. Rhino peak trail holds a close place in my heart. We've run it several times and each time has been a different experience from hot temperatures to snowy, icy, windy weather and when we get to the top of the peak above 3000m, it is such an incredible feeling to be as high as the beautiful bearded vultures soaring just above you.

A free weekend at Mountain Splendour for up to 4 people. Your choice of camping, glamping or a log cabin. And of course a couple of awesome trail runs…… www.mountainsplendour.co.za to take a peek where you could be staying!

Occupation:

Mother and Resort manager

About Me:

I often describe myself as a “mum-on-the-run”. I try (with varying degrees of success) to obtain the elusive balance between family and professional life while squeezing in as much running as I can. Our racing (whether it be trail running, mountain biking or a multi-sport event) is always a family affair – kids are generally included in the adventure of any event. The memories we have made on family road trips and experiences at events are my motivation to keep training and racing!

Sporting Bio:

- Receiving my Half Blue for Cross Country at Cambridge University 2000
- Winning the inaugural Southern Storm event in 2009
- 12th at the World Ultra Trail Champs, Ireland 2011
- 15th place at World Mountain Running Champs, Pikes Peak, Colorado 2013
-
Completing the Lavarado Ultra Trail 120km in the Italian Dolomites (coming 10th in the ladies was a bonus)

Reason for taking Challenge:

Most trail runs are selfish endeavors – what can I achieve? Can I beat my time? Can I win? What trails will I get to enjoy and what spectacular scenery will I experience? The allure of the Rhino Peak Challenge is that it is not just a trail run for personal enjoyment. There is a bigger purpose for donning trail shoes and racing the 21km to the top of RHINO and back.

Athlete

About Me:

I spent most of my childhood life exploring the outdoors on my parent’s farm just outside Cullinan, near Pretoria. This is where I developed my passion for nature & the outdoors. I am a qualified CA with a Masters degree in Taxation and currently work and run for KPMG. I adore any kind of furry little animal and love spending my time in the mountains, away from all the hustle & bustle of city life. My hobbies include camping, travelling, baking, mountain biking and slack-lining. My family and friends describe me as spontaneous, funny, determined and hard-working. I recently competed in the renowned Mont blanc 80k, claiming a 4th position. My most significant victories in South Africa include the Otter Trail run, the Two Oceans Trail, Ultra Trail Cape Town and the Skyrun. I am proud that I had the courage to follow my dream of becoming a professional trail athlete. People who are positive and kind inspire me and people who achieve their goals motivate me. My motto in life: “Those on top of the mountain didn’t fall there..” The best advice I received from my Dad was: “If you ask: “God, why me?” about the dissapointments in life, then you should also ask: “God, why me?” about the successes in your life.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Winner of Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race (2011, India).
- Winner Otter African Trail Run Veteran Men's category (2015)

Reason for taking Challenge:

I love this planet. It's the only one we have. And we've done an awful job of keeping it habitable. It doesn't need us, but boy, do we need Earth. Frank Fenner (the virologist whose team announced the eradication of smallpox) said in 2010 that we've set in motion forces much greater than what we can control: climate change, human conflict, new diseases, poverty, hunger. I separate myself from this chaos as much as I can, sharing with everyone I meet that there is a better way. Killing and exploiting animals (from the smallest to the largest) is an indictment of our small-mindedness. Protecting rhinos is a high-profile way to start the process. I believe that eventually the human animal will realise that all animals deserve our respect and protection.

Occupation:

Environmental Manager

About Me:

As the environmental manager of Eskom, an organization which impacts on the environment, I am passionate about reducing the negative environmental footprint and making a difference in South Africa specifically related to water, biodiversity and clean air. Two key issues which I encourage myself and others to do when taking up the challenge of improving our environment are first to always consider that the earth is our life support system and secondly we need to believe that we can make a difference, believing is a critical ingredient to achieve what we set out to do.

I feel very privileged to be representing the Endangered Wildlife Trust for this challenge.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

Completed full ironman in 2016 and 2017
Completed three half ironman events in 2015, 2016 and 2017
Completed several short triathlons, cycle races including 94.7
Completed my first marathon in 2017

Reason for taking Challenge:

This is an awesome opportunity to demonstrate my passion for sustainability, specifically the role of biodiversity and the important role played by vultures in the ecosystem. Eskom has a partnership with EWT which focuses on reducing the impact of power lines on birds.
While I have participated in many sporting events I have not had the opportunity of such an awesome challenge and have not recently spent time in our beautiful Drakensberg mountains. It seems fitting, given my passion for the environment that I am able to complete this challenge, representing the Endangered Wildlife Trust, contributing to the survival of the bearded vulture.

TEAM MCGREGOR (PIPPA & HANK)

Age: 32

Hometown: Salt Rock

Lucky Draw Prize:
TBC

Occupation:

Pippa - Part Time Athlete / Full Time Mom
Hank - Business Owner LP Hire Construction

About Me:

Pippa - At school I was a sporting all-rounder, playing as much sport as time would allow. In high school I focused more on cross country and canoeing representing South Africa in canoeing. At the age of 16, I went to the World Canoe Championships in Spain, which is where I met my husband Hank. After school I went to University to study to become a Chartered Accountant. Running & paddling became more of a social thing for me; I ran a few road races socially with friends in between studying and partying of course. Gotta live those student years and make memories of course. When my little boy Thorsten was 4 months I started training again. I asked Hank if he would do the Dusi Canoe Marathon with me so I could get back into shape, which was 6 months after Thorsten’s birth and he agreed. Being the elite athlete that Hank is, we ended up breaking the mixed doubles record. Racing the Dusi with Hank fuelled my passion to do races and to challenge myself again. I went on to do The Comrades Marathon the following year and broke my personal marathon record by doing it in 3 hours 30. I did Dusi again the following year in a mixed double with Dave Hamilton Brown and we took the win.

Hank - I grew up on a yacht with my mom and dad and have spent the better half of my life in a boat. Sport and adventure has always been a big part of my life. Canoeing was my main focus for most of my time growing up and I won the Junior World Marathon Championships is Sweden. Since then I have branched into river paddling and surfski paddling and have won every river and surfski race in South Africa as well as many international ones. I am currently involved in a paddle business, Gara Paddles. In addition to paddling I work in my family construction business. I am a dad to an awesome little 3 year boy & husband to Pippa. We both share a love for adventure and the outdoors.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

Hank - 8 x Senior K1 World Marathon Champion

Reason for taking Challenge:

Pippa - I love the outdoors and animals, it is something that has been a big part of my life growing up. Supporting the Rhino Peak Challenge is an opportunity for me to give back in a small way to something that is close to my heart. Sometimes it’s not about the big things but about lots of little things that can make the difference.

Hank - I have fond memories of running up Rhino Peak with some close friends and my wife during my Dusi training one year so when I heard about the fund raiser I was super amped to do it! I am proudly South African and it makes me sad to hear about what has happened to the Rhino’s here so if I can help in a small way then I will be really stoked.

SONJA KRüGER

Age: 45

Hometown: Howick, KwaZulu-Natal

Lucky Draw Prize:
A day (with me or a bird expert) in the vulture hide at Giants Castle with accommodation for 2 the night before.

Occupation:

Ecologist, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife

About Me:

I have been an ecologist with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife since 1998, responsible primarily for the Drakensberg region and the Maloti Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. I initiated the Maloti-Drakensberg vulture Project in 2000 to determine the status of the cliff nesting vultures in the region, the trend in their numbers and the primary threats. For the past 15+ years, I have been driving processes aimed at reducing the population decline, stabilizing the population and growing numbers to achieve 150 breeding pairs in Southern Africa. I’m passionate about these Mountain Monarchs and the mountains and wilderness areas that are their home, and dedicated to protected this special heritage.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Protea colours for Canoeing (Canoe Polo) in 2000, 2002 & 2006

Reason for taking Challenge:

Raise awareness around the plight of the Bearded Vulture: The home of Rhino Peak within the Maloti Drakensberg mountains is also the home of the only population of Bearded Vulture in the Southern Hemisphere. The species is Critically endangered with a high probability of extinction within the next 50 years if measures to reduce mortality rates, increase productivity and supplement the population are not put in place.
Help raise funds for the captive breeding programme: An intervention to safe guard the species by ensuring an ex-situ rescue population to prevent extinction, and to produce viable chicks for reintroduction into suitable areas of their former range.

DENNIS KELLY

Age: 40

Hometown: Hilton

Lucky Draw Prize:
A free 1-night stay for two people, at "Rhino River Lodge"; a Big 5 safari lodge located in the magnificent Manyoni Private Game Reserve, in Zululand. Includes two game drives, three meals and accommodation. Excludes conservation levy and optional extras.

Occupation:

Section Ranger in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park

About Me:

I grew up in Hilton just outside Pietermaritzburg and attended Maritzburg College, after which I completed a Diploma in Nature Conservation at Saasveld College, near George.
I started working for what was then the Natal Parks Board in 1995 as a cadet. I have worked for Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for 14 years, beginning as a Wilderness Trails Officer for 2 years, and then as Section Ranger for 10 years in the Mkhuze Game Reserve. Thereafter I transferred to Hluhluwe Game Reserve, and am currently managing the Makhamisa Section of iMfolozi.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Marrying my wife
- Representing KZN Midlands for Hockey
- Becoming a Section Ranger
- Working in two of the oldest and most special Protected Areas in Africa

Reason for taking Challenge:

Being a Section Ranger I am very involved in Law Enforcement operations, and over the last few years Rhino Poaching has been our main focus. However, I am exceptionally passionate about vultures and keen to do more for vulture awareness and conservation. There are fewer vultures left in South Africa than rhino, and because of the fact that they spend so much time outside the boundaries of formally protected areas and are not as “likeable” as rhino, they face a very bleak future. I am also eager to test myself, since I am only walking fit and am not used to altitude - so it is going to be tough but I’m up for it.

SHANE RAW

Age: 44

Hometown: Pietermaritzburg KZN

Lucky Draw Prize:
Limited edition, framed wildlife print from wildlife photographer Chantelle Melzer valued at over R5000 www.chantellemelzer.com

Occupation:

I am foremost a whitewater kayaker but I tend to get involved in many other sporting disciplines that keep me challenged and outdoors in the fresh air… oh and I moonlight as a financial manager too.

About Me:

I grew up in PMB, the paddling centre of the universe and have had a paddle in my hand for as long as I can remember. My other sporting interests include paragliding, adventure racing, MTB’ing and climbing. Apart from my love (some say addiction) for adventure sports, my other main passion is wildlife. I worked in a very successful private conservation organisation in Swaziland for almost 2 decades during which time I was exposed to many incredible experiences, from the somewhat scary midnight anti-poaching patrols to the awe of watching a rhino give birth or a herd of elephant frolicking in a water hole in the midday sun. I also experienced the gruesome horrors of rhino poaching up close and personal and this sparked something in me, to want to do everything I can to protect our beleaguered wildlife of all shapes and sizes. Over the years I have developed a real affinity with the bush – the simplicity, the genuineness, the ebb and flow. We just cannot allow this to be obliterated right before our eyes. Together with my partner, the beautiful and extremely talented wildlife photographer Chantelle Melzer, we have started several initiatives to create awareness and hopefully make a tangible difference in the fight to protect our natural heritage.

Personal / Sporting Achievements :

- Taken part in kayaking expeditions in over 30 countries on 4 continents… so far!
- Multiple times South African Freestyle Kayaking Champion and competed in 2 World Championship events
- Winner of several local extreme down river races and the South African National Extreme Downriver Race Series in 2014
- First decent of the Zambezi’s Batoka Gorge on a standup-paddleboard as part of the #StandUp4Rhinos team.
- Two times winner of the Swazi Xtreme Adventure Race (Sport Edition) as part of team Aieesh.com

Reason for taking Challenge:

Last year I co-founded a fundraising initiative called #StandUp4Rhinos and our first project was to raise funds for security upgrades at Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary, which rescues and rehabilitates orphans from rhino poaching incidents in KNP and surrounds. Together with 7 other crazy athletes we completed the first descent of the rapids of the mighty Zambezi on stand-up paddleboards and in the process we raised over R100,000 for Care For Wild. It felt SO good to be able to make a tangible difference but there is still so much more to be done.

When I heard about the Rhino Peak Challenge conceived by former classmate Spurgeon Flemington, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved and help them to better their 2016 total. Believe me it’s going to be a personal challenge too. You see, I’m a kayaker and kayakers are not generally known to be well endowed in the legs department. I think each of John Smit’s legs are bigger than mine put together. But these little legs have got some work to do because my goal is to beat John up the hill and raise as much money as possible in the process! I would REALLY appreciate your support to make this happen - so hit the pledge button and let’s GO!!
